Puerto de Sóller is a small, picturesque coastal town in the northwest of Mallorca. Its location, surrounded by the imposing mountains of the Sierra de Tamuntana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, provides it with a unique setting. Its outstanding features are its sheltered harbour in a large bay thronged with sailing boats, its historic tram and orange groves. What's more, its marina is the departure point for many maritime excursions.
It has two beaches with fine white sand and crystal-clear waters, the Playa d'en Repic and the Playa des Traves, one on each side of the bay. It has all kinds of facilities, bars, shops and restaurants where you can eat fresh fish and shellfish. Be sure to visit the Torre Picada, an old watchtower, and the Museum of the Sea to learn about the port's maritime past.
Discover charming villages
Neighbouring Sóller, which is a 45-minute walk away, also has many interesting places. If you take the tram from the port you'll enjoy a pleasant ride that will take you back to another era. It's worth visiting the Church of San Bartomeu, built in the 14th century, the Can Prunera Museum and the Botanical Garden. And if you want to buy local produce, Saturday is market day.
Deià, Valldemossa and Fornalutx are all unmissable nearby villages imbued with immense charm. Walking their narrow cobbled streets, admiring their architecture and enjoying their cuisine will enable you to discover the other side of the island; in the midst of extraordinary landscapes.
Mountain,coast and sea rutes
The Sierra de Tramuntana, criss-crossed by an endless array of tracks and paths, is a unique setting for hiking. The long-distance GR11 route, also known as the Stone Route, passes through Puerto de Sóller. This path, which crosses the Sierra from north to south, will enable you to discover the drystone buildings so characteristic of the island. Another option are the routes that cross the Biniaraix Ravine. On the descent, of medium difficulty, you will enjoy truly unique views and surroundings. Cycle tourism in Majorca
The Mediterranean climate makes the island an ideal place for cycling.
